Premium Charcoal Discs

35 mm

In 1956, Brother Emmanuel of Prinknash Abbey in Gloucestershire set out to solve a long-standing problem with church incense charcoal: the tablets were slow to establish and had to be heated in a wire basket over a Bunsen burner. His breakthrough came through experimentation with saltpetre. He dissolved it in water, mixed it with finely powdered charcoal and pressed the mixture into tablets. The result transformed the lighting process: touched with a flame at one corner, the new charcoal could carry its glow across the entire tablet in under a minute. Prinknash marketed the invention as ‘speedy charcoal’, and the response was extraordinary. In 1958 alone, the abbey sold well over 10,000 boxes, representing more than half a million tablets. It was a remarkable milestone in the development of the quick-light incense charcoal format familiar to incense users today.

About Premium 35 mm Easy-Light Charcoal Discs What the 35 mm charcoal disc does and why the recessed face matters.

Premium 35 mm Easy-Light Charcoal Discs are designed specifically as a heat source for incense. The disc is not incense itself. Once established, it provides the sustained heat used to warm or burn suitable aromatic resins.

Each disc has a recessed X-shaped face that is used upward. The shallow centre helps keep small resin pieces positioned as they soften, while the large 35 mm surface also provides room for controlled indirect heating with a mica plate.

Use them with suitable aromatic resins including Dhofar Royal Hojari Frankincense, Chios Mastic Resin, myrrh, copal and comparable resin incense.

Why 35 mm?

The 35 mm format gives a broad working surface for small resin tears or fragments while remaining compact enough for a purpose-designed incense censer.

It also pairs neatly with the 20 × 20 mm Japanese mica plate. A 20 mm square measures about 28.3 mm from corner to corner, so when centred it remains within the 35 mm charcoal face with a visible margin around the plate.

That exposed margin leaves part of the charcoal surface uncovered rather than blanketing the entire disc, helping preserve airflow around the heating surface.

How Easy-Light Charcoal Works How easy-light charcoal establishes and when it is ready for incense.

Easy-light charcoal is designed to establish from a flame applied at the edge. Once the ignition takes hold, it progresses across the disc. Brief crackling or sparking can occur during this start-up phase.

Do not add incense yet. Set the disc securely in the censer with the recessed X-shaped face upward and allow the ignition phase to pass across the surface. Wait until the disc has settled and a light ash layer has begun to form.

Once established, the charcoal provides the working heat for the session. Add a small amount of resin directly to the recessed face, or position a mica plate first when you want gentler indirect heating.

Direct Heat or Mica-Controlled Heat

Placed directly on established charcoal, resin receives fast, intense contact heat and releases aroma quickly. Use direct heat when a strong, immediate incense presence is wanted.

For a slower, more controlled release, centre a Japanese mica incense heating plate on the established disc and place the resin on the mica. The plate separates the incense from glowing carbon and gives finer control over melting and aromatic release.

Direct charcoal gives intensity. Mica gives control.

Heating & Incense Use Five clear steps from ignition to controlled incense heating and safe cooling.
01 • PREPARE THE CENSER

Place a purpose-designed, heat-resistant incense censer on a stable, non-combustible surface in a well-ventilated area. Keep combustible materials clear of the burner.

02 • IGNITE THE DISC

Using suitable charcoal tongs, hold one disc securely with the recessed X-shaped face upward. Apply a flame to the edge until the easy-light ignition takes hold, keeping the disc away from your face while it starts.

03 • ESTABLISH THE DISC

Set the disc securely in the censer with the recessed face upward. Allow the ignition to travel across the charcoal and wait until the surface begins to develop a light ash layer before adding incense.

04 • ADD INCENSE

For direct heating, begin with a small amount of resin in the recessed top. For gentler indirect heating, place a mica plate on the established charcoal and add the resin to the mica. Allow the aroma to develop before adding more.

05 • FINISH SAFELY

Never leave burning charcoal unattended. When finished, allow the disc to burn out completely in the censer and confirm that the charcoal, ash and burner are fully cold before handling or disposal.

Safety & Storage Carbon monoxide, heat safety and dry-storage guidance.

Burn Safety: Burning charcoal produces carbon monoxide and intense heat. Use only in a purpose-designed incense censer on a stable, non-combustible surface in a well-ventilated area. Never use in a sealed or poorly ventilated space, vehicle, tent or sleeping area. Keep away from children, pets and combustible materials, handle hot charcoal only with suitable tools and never leave it unattended. Allow the charcoal, ash and censer to cool completely before handling or disposal.

Storage Protocol: Keep unused discs in their foil packaging in a cool, dry place away from moisture, heat and ignition sources. Protect opened rolls from humidity until needed.
