Chios Mastic Resin Infused Oil | Pistacia lentiscus

Pistacia lentiscus occurs naturally across much of the Mediterranean, but the celebrated Chios mastiha tradition belongs to southern Chios, where resin production is concentrated across 24 historic Mastichochoria, or mastic villages.

Cultivation is a family practice carried through the year. From mid-June, the ground beneath the trees is swept, levelled and prepared so the resin can be gathered cleanly. From July, growers make a series of small incisions in the trunk and main branches with an iron tool. The clear resin gradually solidifies into the distinctive tears that are collected, cleaned and graded by hand.

UNESCO inscribed the know-how of cultivating mastic on Chios on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014, recognising a living agricultural tradition in which knowledge is passed from older growers to younger generations.

Mastic also has a remarkably long cultural record. Ancient texts associated with Theophrastus, Dioscorides and Galen record Chios mastic, including its use as a cosmetic agent.

Today, genuine Chios mastiha carries Protected Designation of Origin status, linking the resin to its place of production and the cultivation traditions of southern Chios.

Ingredients: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Pistacia Lentiscus Gum.

Each batch begins with 30 g of Chios Mastic resin for every 100 mL of MCT coconut oil.

The resin is maintained in the carrier oil at approximately 50°C for 24 hours, then allowed to rest for a further 24 hours. The remaining insoluble botanical material is carefully removed through stainless steel filtration before bottling.

No separately distilled essential oil, synthetic fragrance or other ingredient is added.

HOW TO USE

Apply a small amount to clean, intact facial or body skin and massage gently until absorbed.

For personal aromatic ritual or anointing, apply externally in the manner appropriate to your own practice.
