Over generations, agua florida became woven into personal ritual and ceremonial practice, particularly across Latin America.

Sacred Plants Australia's Agua de Florida began with a simple question: what happens when the botanicals are placed back at the centre of this famous fragrance?

During development, we worked through several historic druggist formulas for Florida Water. One aromatic structure stood apart. Bergamot, lemon, lavender, clove and cinnamon produced the distinctive fragrance profile we recognised immediately.

Those five essential oils became the foundation of our own formulation.

Bright bergamot and lemon open the fragrance. Lavender brings its unmistakable aromatic character, while clove and cinnamon provide warmth and depth beneath the citrus.

Today, perhaps the most recognisable commercial Florida Water is Murray & Lanman. Its current US retail ingredient declaration lists denatured alcohol, water, fragrances, FD&C Blue Color 1 and FD&C Yellow Color 5. The individual aromatic materials within those fragrances are not identified on the ingredient declaration.

Our approach is intentionally different.

The fragrance in Sacred Plants Australia's Agua de Florida is created from five individually named essential oils. We add no synthetic fragrance and no artificial colour. The remaining ingredients are natural spring water and perfumer's alcohol.

We are not attempting to reproduce another manufacturer's proprietary formula. We returned instead to the older druggist tradition of building Florida Water from aromatic oils dissolved in alcohol, then developed our own formulation, proportions and maturation process around it.

The result is recognisably Agua de Florida, but unmistakably Sacred Plants Australia.

DID YOU KNOW?

Legend tells of Bimini, a mysterious island beyond the known Caribbean where a miraculous spring was said to restore youth and vitality to anyone who drank from or bathed in its waters.

The story became forever entwined with Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León and his voyage of 1513. In the legend, he encountered the Fountain of Youth and a mysterious people whose extraordinary youth seemed almost impossible to the ageing Europeans who met them.

The spring was said to lie among luxuriant tropical plants and exotic flowers. Falling blossoms perfumed the water itself, and when the explorers bathed, the tale says they emerged rejuvenated with the extraordinary fragrance of the spring lingering on their bodies.

That imagery became inseparable from the mythology surrounding Florida Water: flowers, fragrant water and the promise of eternal youth.

Even the name carries the floral connection. Agua de Florida literally means Florida Water, while Florida comes from the Spanish Pascua Florida, the "Feast of Flowers" or flowering Easter season after which Ponce de León named the land.

History tells a less magical story, but the legend endured for centuries and eventually became part of Florida Water's identity.

ORIGINS & ETHNOBOTANICAL HISTORY

The documented history of Florida Water begins within the much older tradition of botanical perfumery.

European aromatic waters and eau de cologne had long been prepared by dissolving fragrant botanical materials and essential oils into alcohol. Florida Water emerged from this tradition as an American fragrance style during the early nineteenth century.

It was never confined to one immutable recipe. Nineteenth-century formularies written for pharmacists and druggists record numerous versions, commonly based on lavender and bergamot with ingredients such as lemon, orange, neroli, clove, cinnamon and rose varying between preparations.

That history has a direct connection to our formulation. Bergamot, lemon, lavender, clove and cinnamon, the five essential oils at the heart of Sacred Plants Australia's Agua de Florida, all occur within documented historic Florida Water formulas.

By the nineteenth century, Murray & Lanman had become one of the best-known names associated with Florida Water, but historical records show that numerous druggists and manufacturers were producing their own interpretations.

The fragrance then acquired another life far beyond the perfume counter.

In Lambayeque, northern Peru, contemporary ethnographic research documents agua florida among the perfumes used by curanderos and curanderas during mesadas.

Perfumes may be offered to the ritual mesa, or altar, as part of a practice described as refrescar, meaning "to refresh". Researchers have observed fragrance being used repeatedly within ceremonial work rather than simply worn as personal perfume.

It is a remarkable journey: an aromatic preparation rooted in perfumery became incorporated into living ritual traditions thousands of kilometres from where the commercial fragrance first became established.

Those traditions belong to the communities and practitioners who maintain them. Sacred Plants Australia's Agua de Florida is a contemporary Australian preparation and is not presented as an ancient Peruvian formula or a reproduction of any particular ceremonial recipe.

Our intention is simpler: to offer an Agua de Florida in which the aromatic botanicals are once again visible, identifiable and central to the experience.

INGREDIENTS & HANDCRAFTED PREPARATION

Ingredients: Natural spring water, denatured ethanol, lemon essential oil, bergamot essential oil, lavender essential oil, clove essential oil and cinnamon essential oil.

Each batch begins by combining the five essential oils with perfumer's alcohol.

The aromatic concentrate is rested for two days before natural spring water is incorporated.

The finished blend is mixed thoroughly, then matured for one month before filling.

That maturation period gives the bright citrus, aromatic lavender and warmer spice notes time to settle together into the finished fragrance.

The exact proportions of the aromatic blend are proprietary to Sacred Plants Australia.

WAYS TO USE

Room & Space Mist: Mist lightly into the surrounding air to introduce its citrus, lavender and warm spice fragrance to a bedroom, living space, studio or chosen setting.

Meditation & Reflection: Use a few sprays in the surrounding space before meditation, prayer, journalling or quiet reflection.

Personal Ritual: Use the fragrance to mark the opening or close of a personal ritual or reflective practice.

Established Ceremonial Practice: Where Florida Water already forms part of your own tradition, use according to the practices and protocols appropriate to that tradition.

Begin with a few sprays and adjust according to the size of the space and your preferred aromatic intensity.

SAFETY & STORAGE

Contains alcohol.

Flammable liquid and vapour.
